Congressman Dwight Evans’ Black History Month Oratorical, Spoken Word & Poetry Slam Showcase

In celebration of Black History Month, Congressman Dwight Evans is hosting an Oratorical, Spoken Word, and Poetry Slam Showcase inspired by the timeless words of Langston Hughes—particularly “Let America Be America Again” and “I, Too (Sing America).”

These powerful poems challenge us to reflect on the American promise—250 years later—and invite us to consider whose voices have been heard, whose have been silenced, and how young people can help shape a more just future.

Participants are invited to draw inspiration from these works to explore themes of identity, freedom, belonging, struggle, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equity and justice.

Through original oratorical pieces, spoken word, poetry, and rap, this showcase will uplift youth voices that speak truth, honor our history, and imagine a more inclusive America. Congressman Evans welcomes students to use their voices to continue the long tradition of storytelling as a tool for empowerment and change.
