Public Safety & Gun Violence

Every day, more than 125 Americans die from gun-related injuries and more than 200 are shot and wounded. As gun violence continues to shatter communities here in Philadelphia and across the country, enough is enough - the time for action is now.

As a member of the Gun-Violence Prevention Task Force in Congress, I’m proud to be an advocate for common sense, result-driven, gun-violence prevention laws. In 2022, I voted for the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the most significant gun safety law in nearly 30 years. This landmark law closed the “boyfriend loophole,” invested in anti-violence programs, and enhanced background checks for young buyers. But Congress can and must do more. We must restore the ban on assault weapons and institute universal background checks for every gun purchase.

We also owe it to all victims of gun violence — from survivors to their loved ones, coworkers, and classmates — that resources are available to them to help support their recovery and manage the long-term effects of this preventable epidemic. That’s why I reintroduced the Resources for Victims of Gun Violence Act alongside Senator Markey this Congress. I’m also co-leading the reintroduction of the Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act, legislation to ensure that victims of gun violence would have their day in court and that negligent gun companies and gun sellers are not shielded from liability when they disregard public safety.
