Evans Makes Super Bowl Bet with Kansas City Congressman

February 9, 2023

Philly & KC lawmakers disagree on Eagles vs. Chiefs, are united on fighting GOP 30% sales tax on cheesesteaks & barbecue

WASHINGTON (Feb. 9, 2023) – Philadelphia Eagles fan Congressman Dwight Evans (D-PA-3rd) has made a Super Bowl bet with his colleague who represents Kansas City, Congressman Emanuel Cleaver II (D-MO-5th). They shook hands on the bet at the U.S. Capitol recently (video is here(link is external)).

"I'm looking forward to enjoying some Kansas City barbecue courtesy of my friend and colleague after the Eagles win! In the unlikely event that things would go the other way, I would deliver some Philadelphia cheesesteaks to him," Evans said. "My colleague is from the ‘Show Me State,' and I can't wait for him to show me the barbecue!"

"One thing that Congressman Cleaver and I agree on is this: We are united on fighting a Republican bill to impose a 30 percent national sales tax(link is external) on your Philly cheesesteaks or Kansas City barbecue! The bill would fund a huge giveaway to the wealthiest Americans and big corporations by putting a 30 percent tax on almost everything you buy – including eggs, diapers, child care, insulin, utility bills, and rent(link is external). I am 100 percent against that!" Evans said.

"Speaker McCarthy has apparently promised the 25 sponsors of this bill some type of action, and in the House of Representatives, the majority can move very quickly when it wants to. You can count on me to be vigilant and to fight this tax plan as a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, which oversees tax legislation. I will be on the front line of this debate, and I'll work to block this extreme tax bill just as hard as the Eagles defense has worked to block the Giants, the 49ers and the rest!"

Evans also said he looks forward to continuing to work with Cleaver on the Good DEED Act(link is external), their legislation which would fight deed fraud, which has been a major problem in Philadelphia, Kansas City and several other communities across the country.

Evans represents the 3rd Congressional District, which includes Northwest and West Philadelphia and parts of North, South, Southwest and Center City Philadelphia.

During Evans' first six years in Congress, his office has helped to return to or save more than $25 million for Philadelphians from federal agencies such as the IRS, Social Security Administration and Department of Veterans Affairs.
