Evans Statement on Speaker Ryan Decision to Not Seek Another Term

April 11, 2018

I have long viewed House Speaker Paul Ryan as an impediment to tackling the issue of poverty in our neighborhoods. As a member of the House Agriculture Committee I am more than disappointed to share that the work requirement rules surrounding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) were an idea of Speaker Ryan's. I represent a district with a poverty rate of nearly 26%. It in no way makes sense for us to make life harder for residents in our neighborhoods and much of the Speaker's actions when it comes to repealing healthcare, placing work requirements on SNAP, passing a tax plan that hurts working families, and much more run counter to our objective of moving the needle on poverty. I am optimistic that without Speaker Paul Ryan we can now work together to tackle the issue of poverty in our neighborhoods in a meaningful way that moves our city forward.
