Deadline for Switch from Paper Checks

1 Day to a Shutdown: Fighting for Hospitals

Unless things change, our country is one day away from a federal government shutdown – current funding runs out at the end of Tuesday, Sept. 30. (You can click here formy office’s page on shutdown resources and frequently asked questions. The page will be updated as new information becomes available.)

However, last week, we learned that the reported response from the White House to a Democratic offer to prevent a shutdown was “Go f--- yourself.” I believe the American people deserve better than that – especially in light of a new study that says hospitals and other health-care providers will take a $32 billion hit next year if health tax credits aren’t extended – that extension is one of the key things I and Democratic colleagues are fighting for! I want to prevent more hospital closings – I want “no more Hahnemanns!”

Trump and his conservative allies control the White House, the Senate, and the House of Representatives. I believe it’s common sense that this means they have the responsibility to prevent a shutdown.

Yet, as of this writing, Speaker Mike Johnson plans to keep the House of Representatives OUT of voting session until Oct. 7, a week past the shutdown deadline. Democrats are ready to work together on preventing a shutdown and the massive health insurance price spike. Without action now on the health-insurance price spike, more than 20 million Americans will be faced with the spike this fall when they look into open enrollment for next year’s coverage. Health insurers are already setting new rates – I believe Congress can’t wait!
