Forcing action on Affordable Care Act tax credits – and winning the House vote!
House Democrats just forced a vote on a bill to restore Affordable Care Act tax credits that expired Dec. 31. We were able to do this because of sustained advocacy that drove four House Republicans to join us in signing a discharge petition to force this vote. The bill passed the House, and now, Pennsylvania’s two senators could make the difference in getting it through the Senate.
I and my Democratic colleagues have been calling for months to renew these tax credits to keep health-coverage premiums from skyrocketing for 22 million Americans. Last year, President Trump pressured congressional Republicans to pass a tax cut for the wealthiest by July 4, and they did. I’m glad this House vote on health-care tax credits has finally happened, but I believe it should have happened much sooner!
Statement on military action in Venezuela
I oppose what I consider to be unauthorized and unconstitutional military actions by the Trump-Vance administration in and near Venezuela. Last month, I voted for a resolution that would have barred President Trump from military action against Venezuela without authorization by Congress, but House Republicans narrowly defeated it. I will continue to fight for Philadelphians and oppose the Trump-Vance agenda! You can read my full statement by clicking here.
Medicare drug savings coming for seniors, thanks to Biden-era law
New Medicare drug savings are coming to Philadelphia seniors thanks to a 2022 law passed by a Democratic Congress and signed into law by President Biden, the Inflation Reduction Act. I was proud to vote for this law! Click here to learn more.
Trump Jan. 6 mass pardons are undermining public safety
This week marked the fifth anniversary of the January 6, 2021, attack at the U.S. Capitol. Click here to read a report from the House Judiciary Committee Democrats about the harms that President Trump’s Jan. 6 mass pardons have done to public safety. For example: At least 33 pardoned January 6 insurrectionists have now been convicted of, charged with, or arrested for additional crimes since the violent attack on the Capitol.
Postmark change will require hand-canceling in some cases
A recent change by the U.S. Postal Service will require customers to visit a USPS retail counter to have a same-day postmark on outgoing mail.
According to USPS, “if a customer wants to ensure that their mailpiece receives a postmark, and that the date on the postmark aligns with the date of mailing, the customer may take the mailpiece to a Postal Service retail location and request a manual (local) postmark at the retail counter when tendering their mailpiece. The manual postmark will be applied free of charge.” You can read more from USPS about this by clicking here.
