Evans Voting to Prevent a U.S. Default and Economic Crash

May 31, 2023

WASHINGTON (May 31, 2023) – Congressman Dwight Evans (D-PA-3rd) announced he will vote yes on a bipartisan budget agreement to prevent a U.S. default and an economic crash that would have resulted from default.

“Ultimately my vote is for preventing a 2008-like economic crash and recession – and protecting the vast majority of the progress we made in the first two years of the Biden-Harris administration,” Evans said.

“I disagree with some parts of this deal pushed by the House Republican majority and support changing those parts when possible, such as the restrictions and added bureaucracy tied to SNAP food assistance for some of our most vulnerable neighbors,” Evans said.

“Defaulting on the national debt would disrupt Social Security benefits for 92,000 households in my Philadelphia congressional district. I will NOT stand by and let that happen to our nation’s seniors and people with disabilities. I urge my colleagues not to draw out this debt crisis and instead return our focus to lowering costs for working families.”

Evans represents the 3rd Congressional District, which includes Northwest and West Philadelphia and parts of North, South, Southwest and Center City Philadelphia.

During Evans’ first six years in Congress, his office has helped to return to or save more than $25 million for Philadelphians from federal agencies such as the IRS, Social Security Administration and Department of Veterans Affairs.
